Mindset, Momentum & Entering the Industry as a New Freelancer
Finishing university and stepping into the industry as a freelancer has been one of the most exciting and uncertain transitions of my life so far. There isn’t a clear roadmap once you leave education, and that can feel overwhelming at times but it’s also where real growth begins. I’ve quickly learned that this stage is less about having everything figured out, and more about being open, adaptable, and willing to learn as you go.
One of the biggest shifts for me has been understanding that you don’t need to feel fully ready to begin. In fact, most people aren’t. The industry moves fast, and waiting for the “perfect moment” often means missing opportunities altogether. A mindset I’ve really taken on board is: don’t wait to feel ready. The industry moves fast. Confidence often comes after you take the leap, not before.
Since graduating, I’ve also realised how much value there is in every single role, no matter how small it might seem. Whether it’s a runner shift, research work, tea making on set, or assisting a production team, it all builds experience and understanding. Every role teaches you something. A runner, researcher, tea maker it all counts. Learning on the job, watching others, and asking questions has become a huge part of how I approach every opportunity. It might sound silly but I try to be a sponge and soak everything in, from how teams communicate to how productions are structured and delivered.
Another important lesson has been managing comparison. It’s so easy to look at other people’s journeys and feel like you’re behind, especially in such a competitive industry. But I’ve had to remind myself someone else’s timeline is not your deadline. Everyone is building something at their own pace, and focusing on your own lane is what actually moves you forward.
I’ve also had to reframe how I think about mistakes. Coming out of university, there can be a pressure to be perfect, but in reality, growth comes from experience, not perfection. You’re allowed to make mistakes. What matters is that you grow, stay curious, and keep showing up. Every project, every conversation, every early opportunity is part of learning what works and what doesn’t.
What I’m most passionate about is being in the process of becoming. I’m interested in creating and exploring the world through mindset, media, and digital storytelling. I love the idea of turning ideas into visuals, sharing inspiring perspectives, and using digital spaces to connect with people in meaningful ways. For me, media is not just about production, it’s about communication, emotion, and impact.
It’s important to be honest, this industry is not easy. It takes time, consistency, and a lot of resilience. There are moments of doubt, rejection, and uncertainty. But I’m learning that if you stay committed, keep showing up, and continue putting in the work, the rewards come later, often in ways you didn’t expect at the beginning.
Right now, I’m focused on building, learning, and growing through every opportunity that comes my way. I’m still at the beginning, but I’m excited by that. Because this stage isn’t about having arrived, it’s about everything you’re becoming along the way.
